Indicted union boss can spend weekends at the Jersey shore
The president of a mobbed-up labor union will get to enjoy some fun in the sun while he awaits trial on racketeering and extortion charges.
Anthony Fazio Jr. won permission today for weekend trips to New Jersey, where his lawyer said "he frequently sees friends, shops and visits the Jersey Shore."
Manhattan federal Judge Katherine Forrest signed off on the request after prosecutors didn't object to easing the conditions of Fazio's $250,000 bond, which barred him from traveling outside New York City and the surrounding suburbs.
Court papers also reveal that the FBI uncovered ties between Fazio's union -- Local 348-S of the United Food and Commercial Workers -- and the Genovese crime family.
The evidence includes surveillance that showed regular, "face-to-face" meetings between Fazio's cousin -- union secretary/treasurer John Fazio Jr. -- and reputed Genovese captain John Barbato.
The feds also listened in on calls between John Fazio and Rita Gigante, daughter of the late Genovese boss Vincent "The Chin" Gigante, court papers say.
Anthony Fazio, his cousin and father -- Local 348-S founder Anthony Fazio Sr. -- were busted last year for allegedly scamming more than $2.4 million through their control of the Brooklyn-based union.
The feds say they used threats of "possible labor disruptions" to strong-arm payoffs from more than a dozen businesses.
Anthony Fazio Sr. and John Fazio are also accused of embezzling funds by submitting "fraudulent invoices for non-existent goods."
The UFCW International Union put the 13,000-member local under control of a trustee after their arrests.
