A Brookfield man indicted on federal drug charges earlier this year for his alleged role in a large-scale area marijuana ring was sent back to jail Wednesday for violating the conditions of his release.
U.S. Magistrate Donna Martinez found during a hearing Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Hartford that Glenn Wagner, 48, violated the conditions of his release in November and remanded him to custody.
A federal prosecutor said Wagner, who is facing several charges including conspiracy to distribute marijuana and is expected to enter a guilty plea next week, left his parents' home on Nov. 24 after an argument with his father.
Wagner, who had been wearing an electronic monitoring ankle bracelet, was required to stay in his parents' custody as part of his release while the charges against him are pending.
Martinez said in her decision that after leaving the house, Wagner was "hysterical" during a taped telephone conversation with his probation officer, and checked himself into Danbury Hospital.
The next day, according to the magistrate, Wagner returned to one of his homes in Brookfield.
Wagner's attorney, Donald Cretella, said his client "for lack of a better term, snapped" that day from the stress of the case pending against him.
Cretella asked Martinez to allow his client to stay with his girlfriend in one of the two homes Wagner owns in the Candlewood Shores community.
Martinez said in court that she was rejecting that request because investigators found 20 pounds of marijuana in each of the two houses shortly before Wagner's arrest.
Martinez said a loaded weapon, which authorities said was a shotgun, and a "substantial amount of money" were also seized from the homes.
Cretella argued that his client had made every court appearance to date, including bond-revocation hearings, knowing full well that "he could end up on a van to Long Island."
Cretella added that when returning to his Brookfield home, Wagner called the probation department to ask about how to re-install the electronic monitoring device on his ankle.
Both Martinez and a federal prosecutor said, however, that Wagner had violated the terms of his release on several instances since his arrest -- including two failed drug tests.
Wagner was arrested in February along with Bethel resident Mark Mansa, 47, who authorities said ran the drug ring and also sold steroids to those in the body-building industry and to high school-age student athletes.
Also named in the indictment were Kevin Lubic, a New York man with alleged ties to the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club, and Florida resident Richard Sciaccetano, who authorities said has ties to the Bonanno crime family and was the drug ring's source for the marijuana.
