Colombo mob wife granted separate trial from wiseguy husband

This “wisegal” is branching out on her own.
Alicia DiMichele -- the 38-year-old wife of a Colombo crime-family mobster -- won her bid to stand trial solo yesterday.
That spares her from standing in court alongside a bunch of broad-shouldered men charged in a Mafia racketeering scheme, including her husband, Edward “Tall Guy” Garofalo Jr. It also frees Garofalo to testify on his wife’s behalf.
“We intend to call him as a witness at trial,” John Wallenstein, DiMichele’s lawyer, told Brooklyn federal Judge Sandra Townes.
Garofalo wants to tell the jury that his wife wasn’t helping the Colombos embezzle union pension money while she was employed at Mafia-controlled construction companies.

Experts say DiMichele’s case is unusual because gangster’s spouses almost always steer clear of their husband’s illicit activities.
