Colombo mobster wants bail to get treatment for ailments suffered at Ground Zero
An alleged Colombo family mobster is trying to get out of jail on bail, saying he needs immediate medical treatment he can't get behind bars for health problems he developed while working at Ground Zero in the days following the 9/11 attacks.
Edward "Tall Guy" Garofalo Jr. worked as a union crane operator at the trade center site.
While Garofalo sat behind the controls of a crane, law-enforcement sources believe, fellow Colombo wiseguys were engaged in a massive theft of scrap metal from the site.
Garofalo is not believed to have taken part in any metal thefts.
But several of them face charges of shaking down a demolition firm working at the site later, Brooklyn federal prosecutors say.
Garofalo is jailed on conspiracy and embezzlement charges along with his wife, Alicia DiMichele. They're accused of using their trucking business to loot the pension fund of members of Teamsters Local 282.
DiMichele was profiled in The Post on July 5 because of her willingness -- rare among mob wives -- to get her hands dirty in the family business.
Garofalo's lawyer, Steve Zissou, told Brooklyn federal Judge Sandra Townes that his client's lungs are so badly scarred, he needs the services of specialists.
Like many first responders and members of cleanup crews, Garofalo is a participant in the World Trade Center Medical Monitoring and Treatment Program, the lawyer told the judge.
