UPDATE: Frank "Bobo" Marrapese, Eddie Lato, Others Arrested in Sweep
State Police announced Friday the arrests of 24 people, including several well-known organized crime figures, as a result of a six-month wiretap investigation into alleged illegal gambling operations, and other illegal activities.
Lt. Col. Raymond White (acting RISP Superintendent) and Attorney General Peter Kilmartin discussed the investigation at a press conference Friday.
The investigation dates back to the fall of 2010, when former Attorney General Patrick Lynch was given approval for a wiretap of Vincent Tallo's cell phone. Tallo was the subject of an organized criminal gambling operation. The wiretap told authorities that Tallo was accepting illegal sports wagers at the college and pro level. Also, that Tallo was allegedly buying and selling prescription drugs out of his Johnston home.
Later, several of Tallo's accomplices were identified, including Edward Lato, age 65; Frank "Bobo" Marrapese, Jr., age 68; and Alfred "Chippy" Scivola, age 69, of 104 Brown Avenue, Johnston, RI. All are long-standing members of the Patriarca crime family. Marrapese is currently on parole from a life sentence for the 1987 murder of Richard "Dickie" Callie. He had been released from prison in 2008.
All in all, the investigation led to a sweep Friday morning of 23 people (24 including Tallo) on various charges. Police departments from Warwick, Cranston, Providence, Johnston, North Providence, Pawtucket, Glocester, and Smithfield served arrest and search warrants related to the investigation.
Police also seized one handgun, about $75,000 cash, several cars, and thousands of prescription pills.
